How Much Energy Does Lomi Use?

Food scraps make up the largest amount of waste diverted to landfills, where they break down and release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. With 37% of food waste generated by home kitchens, individual consumers can reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by composting food scraps with Lomi at home.

Lomi is designed to reduce emissions by helping to keep food waste out of landfillspeeding up the composting process, and sequestering carbon into soil when mixed with Lomi dirt. When Lomi’s dirt product is used in home compost, backyard soil, or houseplant soil, Lomi can reduce over 70% of carbon emissions annually. Lomi’s design is also mindful of energy consumption, as energy use is another key factor in building a more environmentally conscious future.

Lomi 1.0 has 3 unique modes that can use between 0.6 to 1.0 kWh per cycle. The selected mode will determine the time to complete the cycle as well as cycle-specific energy requirements. The energy used by appliances is measured in power, or kilowatts (kW), used over time and is expressed as kilowatts per hour (kWh).

So, lets take a look at how much power Lomi uses to run on each of its three different modes.

Grow Mode

The Grow Mode cycle requires 16-20 hours to break down food and organic waste. This cycle produces a nearly mature compost like end product. The Grow Mode consumes 1 kWh per cycle.

Eco-Express Mode

The Eco-Express cycle requires 3-5 hours to start the decomposition of food and organic waste and significantly reduces food waste volume in a short time period. This mode consumes 0.6 kWh per cycle.

Lomi-Approved Mode

The Lomi-Approved cycle requires 5-8 hours to break down both food waste and Lomi-approved bioplastics, products, and packaging into an unfinished immature compost like end-product. This mode consumes 0.75 kWh per cycle.

How does Lomi compare to other kitchen appliances’ energy use?

With an energy requirement of 0.6-1.0 kWh per cycle, Lomi 1.0 uses less energy than some common daily use kitchen appliances. On average, ovens require 2.3 kWh per hour of use and a normal dishwasher uses between 1.0 and 2.17 kWh per load. Thus, on a per-use basis, dishwashers and ovens can use up to twice as much energy as Lomi.

When we consider typical appliance usage time, the distinction in energy requirements is even more pronounced. For example, the shortest dishwasher cycle requires 1.0 kWh for a 1.5-hour cycle while the longest Lomi cycle, Grow Mode, uses the same amount of energy for the entire 20-hour cycle. Therefore, Lomi requires less energy to operate than a dishwasher.

Average Energy (kWh) Consumed

Efficient energy use is a key component of building a more sustainable future. Lomi’s design bears this goal in mind. Even the longest Lomi cycle requires less energy than regularly-used home appliances such as dishwashers and ovens. Lomi’s eco-conscious design is focused on maintaining energy efficiency while also minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.
